Originating in Yemen, the Bohri community set its foothold in India through settlers of the 11th century in Gujarat. The name Bohra is a reconstruction of a Gujarati word "Vahaurau," meaning to trade.
The Bohris are great food lovers who believe in the concept of dining together on a single platter called the Thaal.
The initial settlement of the Bohris in Gujarat has led to a significant Gujarati influence on their cuisine. This is why Bohri cuisine is much lighter and lower in spice compared to Mughlai or Pakistani food.
Bohri cuisine focuses on the flavor of the ingredients to create a unique experience distinct from what many of us are used to in India. Typically, meat is boiled with ginger, garlic, or chili pastes, and the same broth is often used to create the gravy, adding a meatiness to each bite, complemented by the subtle flavors of ginger and garlic. Due to the parboiling, the resulting dish consists of perfectly soft and succulent chicken or mutton. With roots in Yemen, the cuisine also has many Arabic and Middle Eastern influences.
Mumbai, the Maximum City, is a city with deep cultural roots, rich heritage, and a plethora of hidden gems. One such cultural gem of Mumbai is 'The Bohri Mohalla,' a lane full of gastronomical memories not only for Bohris but for every Mumbaikar.
Its narrow lanes and flavorful aromas have attracted people from all cultures, classes, and religions, especially during Eid when the entire lane is lit and brimming with life.
Whether it’s the century-old bakeries, handmade sancha ice creams, or the tender juicy seekh kebabs, Bohri Mohalla has never failed to mesmerize and tantalize the taste buds of its patrons and wanderers.
With infrastructure around Bohri Mohalla changing rapidly, although for the good, some things in life are always cherished the old-fashioned way.
Chef Fakhera pays homage to The Bohri Mohalla and all its veterans.
